Hip-Hop Love Stories and the Construction of Socially Acceptable Urban Identities

Hip-Hop has always existed as a man dominated by & 39; industry. Being a reflection of urban life and struggle, past Hip-Hop artists have been forced to maintain a certain level of masculinity to be accepted by their urban communities. Old school rappers who talked about the & 39; love are often seen as soft or corny. Because of this perception, & 39; existence of the & 39; love Hip-Hop is a relatively new concept.
As movement won the support and recognition in the world, & 39; love has become a theme increasingly common in the hip-hop music and poetry. However, the taboo that still exists. Even today & 39; hui, Hip-Hop poets and artists to present their stories of love & 39; d & 39; a way that allows them to maintain the identities socially acceptable. Hip-Hop stories on & 39; love must always meet the masculine ideology in which the movement is rooted in order & 39; be perceived as real and true.
The purpose of this study is to analyze & 39; Hip-Hop love stories and how artists to present these stories & 39; d love to build identities socially acceptable. I believe that personal accounts are closely related to the construction of identities. C & 39; east through personal stories that people can tell the life changing events, achieve a socially acceptable and create identities.
I have researched and studied several Hip-Hop songs of love and & 39; d & 39; analyse the words in the form of text and poetry. In my research, I& 39;ve found five & 39; narrative forms used by Hip-Hop poets to tell their stories of love & 39;: contrast, perception, spiritual, conversational and metaphorical. These five narrative forms are used not only to present properly the & 39; history, but also to maintain positive perception between a company that could take this sensitivity low or disrespectable. J ai & 39; l & 39; intention to demonstrate each of these forms of narrative and show how poets use them to tell their stories of love & 39; while establishing & 39; acceptable identity.
The contrasting
One Narrative of the most common forms of Hip-Hop stories d & 39; is the love story mixed. Many artists use the hip-hop music and poetry to tell stories about the negativity that surrounds their urban environments. The contrast allows the narrative poet d & 39; express his & 39; story of love as a contrast to this negativity while the construction of an identity & 39; acceptable because the negativity is real and understood in urban communities.
A great example of & 39; introduction to the narration contrast is the following passage from Method Man " All I Need ":

Back when I was & 39; nothin & 39;
You is a brother feel like it was Somethin & 39;
That why I am with you to this day no boo Frontin & 39;
Even when the sky was gray
You rub me on my back and say " Baby It is well "

In this song, the poet uses narration contrast to show his love for someone & 39; s & 39; one that is held close to him when " sky was gray. & ; quot; He speaks of his love d & 39; interest as a & 39; someone who helped get through difficult times, allowing a positive contrast to his negative environment.
Another example of the narration contrasts love can be seen in this passage Guru "All I Said ":
This world is crazy, it is supposed & 39; m help to stay healthy d & 39; spirit
Supposed to help pain, & 39; m supposed to help maintain this

In song, the guru uses the contrast narrative to share his vision of what & 39; is the love & 39; l & 39; should be. He acknowledges that his "world is crazy ", and that his interest is the love & 39; d & 39; someone who can make it bearable.
In " She tried ", Bubba Sparxx uses the contrast story to tell a story that actually recalls his love to be there for him when he was in conflict with the law:

A fly country girl, Workin & 39;
She gifts for my queen, was a virgin I guess I
But n & 39; is not ever ask and I do
But Betty never had the money & 39; whenever I went to
prison
This song & 39; illustrates the use of contrasting stories to express the love & 39;. Although the poet confesse spend much time in prison, Betty has always been there for him bail, acting as another positive contrast to its problems.
The common perception Narrative
Another narrative form of Hip-Hop stories d & 39; love is the story of perception. As the story contrast, the perception & 39; s story articulates around the negativity that surrounds the life of poet. But instead present this love as a contrast to this negativity, the poet uses the story of & 39; explain how this love has changed his previously negative perception. This narrative form also allows the poet to build a socially acceptable identity due to the recognition of the negativity of urban life.
In " " Jazzy Belle, Andre of Outkast perception uses the story to tell how his love of his former changed the perception of women:

Went of Yellin & 39; crickets and crows, witches and hoes to Thangs
Over queen of years I& 39;m on my toes and yes I seen Thangs
Now I& 39;m Willin & 39; to go the extra kilo-
Meter just to see my son get Senorita
On the pillow beside my bed where no girl ever
House stay and doctor was the games we used to play
But Now it is true Jazzy Belle ...

In this song, Andr spoke of a personal change of perception caused by & 39; love. He admits that, at a time when he thought of women as "witches and hoes. " But now it is real ", and it has a new perception of women as" Queen & Thangs ; quot;.
Another excellent example of the story collection can be found in the following passage of Black Star " Brown Skin Lady ":
I do not receive many compliments, but I am convinced
Used d & 39; have a complex , Gettin & 39; too complex
You m & 39;, Willin & 39; d & 39; try & 39; m watched in & 39; eye
My head is still in the sky , Since you walked on

In by this example, the poet admits to having relationships, but tells how the & 39; love has helped overcome these problems. The poet of love & 39; d & 39; interest have helped change the perception of & 39; love and fear of " Gettin & 39; too complex ".
In " Ms. Fat Booty ", Mos Def illustrates this point by demonstrating the perception of other men and speaking of his love on how it is different:

Yo, let me apologise & 39; for the other night
I know that & 39; n & 39; it is not fair, but you know what baby c & 39; is that
Some brothers do not be comin & 39; Right
I understand, I& 39;m Feelin & 39; you
Besides, " Can I have a dance? " & 39; n is not really original

In this song, the poet uses the story of perception to recognize that some men " not be comin & 39; " right, but that & 39; he has a different perception of women than these other men.
In " Come Close ", common perception uses the story of how & 39; express the love & 39; made him change his old ways:

I want to build a tribe d & 39 ; mind you
Protect and to provide you
Truth is I can not hide in
The pimp
May have me die with you

Although the poet used to be a "pimp", an urban term for a man who romances a large number of women, he tells how his love d & 39; interest has changed his actions and perceptions.

The spiritual Narrative
A third form of Hip-Hop love stories d & 39;, c & 39; is what I & 39; likes to describe the spiritual narrative. The story spiritual & 39; s support on the characterization of the poet of love & 39; as a kind of piety is, spiritual strength and royalties, often with the feeling that & 39; story window to protect this strength. The story allows the spiritual storyteller to construct an identity acceptable to characterize as & 39; spiritual love or even perhaps predetermined.
A excellent example of spiritual story can be found in this passage of The Roots " You Got Me ":

Somebody m & 39; said that the planet was small
We use to live in the same building on the same floor
And never met before, I
Until & 39;m overseas tour
And look Ethiopian Queen of Philly
Taking classes to & 39; foreign

Here, the poet uses the spiritual narrative to describe the time, place and emotions that his love was founded, speaking d & 39; s & 39; them as they were somehow destined to occur. He also made reference to his interest as & 39; " love this Ethiopian Queen of Philadelphia ", using the royal characterization so common in & 39; spiritual love stories.
In " L & 39; love of language, "Talib Kweli also uses a narrative form spiritual and refers to his love as a sort of royalty:

Now s & 39; they call you by your name
Then c & 39, is another thing but
Anything Queen
I & 39; ll go to war as a King

This example shows the & 39; aspect of protecting the common spiritual & 39; love stories. The poet & 39; considers that it is unacceptable that anyone " you call your name ", or d & 39; other words, & 39; use derogatory language toward his love. If someone & 39; one to do so, it would be " go to war as a king ", thus maintaining its masculinity.
In " Mind Sex ", Dead Prez spiritual uses the story to speak of love & 39; presentations:
African princess, tell me yo & 39; interests
Wait, let me guess boo you & 39;ve probably as poetry
Here a little something that I jotted to & 39; case, I & 39;& 39;ve spotted around you
So let me take this opportunity

In this song, the poet uses the spiritual story to tell a story about the introduction & 39; that & 39; conversation he had with a love d & 39; interest. He refers to it as " African princess ", showing once again the tendency of poets who use the spiritual story refer to their love interest charges. Conversational
The Narrative
The fourth form of Hip-Hop stories d & 39; love is the story of conversation. The story of conversation allows the poet to recite or recreate a conversation with his love and present it as play-as & 39; story of a love & 39;. Conversation in love stories are typically characterized by a speech & 39; introduction and compliments, and are most commonly used as a means of telling a story about a first meeting or printing. These stories of the storyteller to build an acceptable identity mainly because they often include many non-structured compliments, and the poet make it resemble a cool ladies man.
A excellent example of love & 39; conversational narrative can be found this passage of Dead Prez & 39; previously mentioned " Mind Sex ":

Pardon l & 39; love me, but as you seem the type
What you doin & 39; tonight?
You should stop by the site
We could roll some weed play some records and talk
I a fly takes place in downtown Brooklyn, New York

In this example, is the poet reciting the conversation between himself love and d & 39; interest. As in many stories of conversation, it & 39; articulates around meeting someone & 39; one for the first time. The poet is to tell the story & 39; d & 39; a girl that he met & 39; that " seem [ed] as the type ". He then asked " What you doin & 39; tonight? ", And follows with a list of charming speech in an attempt to create a social relationship with the girl.
In a similar story, " Beautiful Skin ", Goodie Mob uses the following account of the conversation to retell the first telephone conversation that & 39; he had with his love interest d & 39;:

This Carlito is a few days, you tired his
Forgive me if I & 39;& 39;ve called you too late
But what better time to bring the spirit & 39;-states?
Where could I begin?
Has someone tells you a & 39; " You have beautiful skin?

This example illustrates the use & 39; d & 39; introduction to the language of conversation stories. The poet asks his love interest d & 39; if it wishes to bring the " & 39; mind-States "or to know each other. He then said that & 39; it is "beautiful skin, often successfully a comprehensive introduction to women.
Cee Lo uses the following account of a conversation " Slum Beautiful ":
Look to you, incredible, beautiful brilliant
You & 39; you re looking deliciously divine darling you really and truly do
The very thought of me running at a speed of & 39; love everything about
Exploring you from the ground above God

In this song, the poet uses the story of conversation to speak directly to his love interest in the piece. Note the wide range of compliments offered in this passage, as well as the charm, illustrating another common aspect of the conversation narrative.

The metaphorical Narrative
This fifth of Hip-Hop stories d & 39; love is perhaps the most fascinating. C & 39; is the metaphorical story. The metaphorical story is used when the poet speaks of love in & 39; a metaphor d & 39; a kind. The most popular and socially acceptable form of narrative metaphorical uses Hip-Hop as metaphor. Many followers of the movement towards Hip-Hop as a driving force of & 39; love and happiness in their lives. Thus, many love stories d & 39; metaphorical revolve around Hip-Hop itself.
A good example of & 39; such a metaphorical story is the following passage from Black Eyed Peas " " Rap Song:

Yo, she got hip hop for
And it & 39; is not goin & 39; pop
She as a disc that I want to rock
When I am, I will turn my Cruisin & 39; block

In this example, the poet uses a unique set of words and speaks d & 39 A love interest as a Hip-Hop metaphor. It refers to that person " a record that I Want to Rock ".
The group further extends the metaphor in the following passage:
She as a time which makes me want to seize the microphone
She as the words that I would like to recite
She as the old school microphone with cable
You can make your documents and I will save the platinum

Again years, the poet brings his love interest d & 39; other things himself and his audience l & 39; love, including "micro old school with cable ", reciting the words and spinning records on a turntable.
Another excellent example of the story is a metaphorical The Roots " law Too Love of My Life ":

Learnin "the tricks of survival
Peepin ghetto " on the situation, I & 39; I had to slide through
Had watch my back and my front of my side too
When he came to gettin & 39; mine I & 39; n is not Tryin & 39; to assert
Sometimes I wouldn & 39; is your & 39; if it was not for you
Hip-Hop, you & 39; the love of my life and c & 39; is true

This passage is unique because it & 39; uses both metaphorical and contrast techniques narratives. The poet refers to Hip-Hop as " l & 39; love of my life ", while showing how the love & 39; created a positive contrast to the harsh ghetto " ropes " survival. The poet & 39; admits that he "made wouldn & 39; your & 39; if it was not for you ", showing that his love for hip-hop has been and is a driving force in its life.
And which leads us to the most popular Hip-Hop metaphorical love story of our time. In " I Used To Love Her ", common sense metaphorical uses the story of & 39; express his love for hip-hop. He begins the story with the following passage:

I met this girl, when I had & 39; ten years
And what I& 39;ve & 39; most loved, it was so
She soul was old school, when I & 39; was just a shorty
Never knew throughout my life, it would be there for me

In this example, the poet begins & 39; tell the story of a girl & 39; that he & 39; & 39; met when he " " ten years, and how she was always there for him. The poet continues & 39; use the metaphorical story to talk about this girl, including the good times and the difficulties they face. That & 39; is that the end of the poem did & 39; listener realize that the entire song is a metaphor. The song ends with the following passage:

I see rappers slammin & 39; it, and Takin & 39; sound l & 39; sewer
But I take her back hopin & 39; things stop
Cause whom I& 39;m Talkin & 39; after all there is & 39; Hip - Hop

In this song, the poet used the metaphorical story to tell a story about the & 39; love of his life, struggles before it, and its desire to save her. Ultimately, he admits that this love & 39; n is not a real person, but his love of Hip-Hop.
The presentation of Hip-Hop love stories is a very difficult task. To speak of love and & 39; still socially acceptable to build an urban identity, artists tend to implement a five successful l & 39; love narrative forms. I think our society, & 39; analysis hip-hop and culture is at best dull. The Hip-Hop love stories presented above could provide a large base of linguistics and sociolinguistics studies. Not only are they presented in a style variety of narrative forms, but it can also act & 39; s d & 39; deep thought, perception and & 39; analysis of the environment & 39; Urban which characterizes a growing majority of American society. With the & 39; analysis and study of these & 39; d & 39; love stories, linguists could happen to a better understanding and appreciation for the Hip-Hop vernacular literature and, ultimately , Culture.
